A conversão da irradiação solar em energia térmica para a produção de água quente é feita em coletores solares térmicos e a conversão em energia elétrica é feita em módulos fotovoltaicos. A partir desta situação surge a possibilidade de unir um módulo fotovoltaico a um coletor térmico, montando o que é conhecido por coletor híbrido Térmico/Fotovoltaico (PVT).
