Abstract

Considering the crescent interest in the use of photovoltaic (PV) systems to production of electrical energy and that soiling impacts on performance, this article aims to present a literature review on the characteristics and effects of dirt in PV systems. Thus, a methodological procedure is adopted for a systematic literature review (SLR) to optimize the process of searching, selecting, and extracting of the information. Through the execution of the search protocol and the use of the StArt tool, 21 primary studies (PS) that present results of outdoor investigations on the characteristics and effects of soiling naturally deposited on PV modules of different technologies installed in different locations around the world were identified and analyzed. The bibliometric analysis identifies the annual distribution of publications, the locations where the studies were carried out, the means of scientific dissemination that published the PSs and the main researchers. Through the analysis of the PSs, it was observed that the short-circuit current (Isc) is usually the parameter most affected by the presence of soiling, as well as that there are different responses depending on the PV technology. Furthermore, it was verified that elements such as Si, Ca, Al, O, Fe, Ca and appear in the composition more frequently and that the main mineral compounds detected are quartz, calcite and dolomite.
