This work aims to present a method to assess the technical and economic viability, both from the electric utility’s perspective and from the standpoint of low-income residential consumers, of solar thermal energy applied to water heating (shower only) in popular housing through methods of measurement and verification of demand and energy consumed by a group of monitored solar heating systems installed in low income housing in Florianópolis, Brazil. The results for the applied technology to a 12-month analyzed period show that the aggregation of solar energy to the bath provided an average of 38% annual electricity savings, annual reduction of 42% in peak-time electricity demand, annual avoided costs of $ 78.30 per consuming unit due to the postponement of investments in the electrical system expansion, and annual avoided costs of $ 16.20 per consuming unit due to the reduction of operational expenses. The results also show that the aggregation of solar energy to the bath can generate funds from the Certified Emission Annual Reduction, via projects of the Clean Development Mechanism for renewable energy, of approximately $ 2.33 per consuming unit. Finally, the results show that investments in projects of implantation of solar energy with annual discount rate up to 9.0% present financial attractiveness.
