Abstract

This paper develops an experience carried out by professionals in the official production of school buildings and a research group devoted to the study of habitat-energy and the environment. The aspects which have been analyzed are the stages of pre-design, thermal-light simulation and hygro-thermal energy audit of an elementary school which has been designed under environmental awar eness criteria and which is located in the suburbs of La Plata city, Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the pre-design, according to location and orientation variants, it was concluded that, as an alternative to the northern solar orientation of the classrooms (non-existent in the urban plan of the city), the northeast orientation is more beneficial than the northwest. On the other hand, the internal classroom of the block presented between 1,6 and 3,7 °C more than the two classrooms which are at the outer part of the building. Finally, lighting levels and daylight rates were obtained in the analysis of the luminance (for cloudy days). These did not exceed the minimum established by the IRAM-AADL J20-02 for the most part of the day. During the audit, it was showed that the difference between internal and external classrooms on days without energy input and with occupation was of 1 °C at the most. The temperatures reached in the classroom in September without external energy were within the thermal comfort levels. The average of maximum temperature which was reached with auxiliary energy was that of 20 °C, consuming 0,075 m 3/m 2 per day of natural gas. With regard to natural lighting, it was observed that luminance and daylight rate on a cloudy day reached the minimum values and they were found at very good levels on a sunny day in September.
