The aim of this paper is to present the location study for the implementation of a 1 MW parabolic trough solar power plant. This plant is the first step for the development of an Experimental Research Platform in solar energy in Brazil. The project takes into account the possibility of future expansion for the inclusion of new solar generation technologies. The location study was based on the calculated values of direct normal irradiance and the availability of: i) water from nearby rivers; ii) transmission lines and substations; iii) infrastructure iv) access and services for the construction of the plant. The chosen site is in the region of the South Pontal Irrigation Project, near the city of Petrolina - PE.
