For a better use of water heating solar collectors it is necessary to know its potential through tests of efficiency and determination of its operating characteristics. For these tests, facilities are needed to enable testing of different types of collectors on the market as well as these facilities need to meet the current standards for the appropriate tests and comparisons. In the recent years, some standards have changed in Brazil, and older facilities were outdated, requiring the modification or construction of new facilities for testing purposes. This article discusses the design and construction of a facility for testing of these collectors in accordance with the new standard in use in Brazil. This standard, NBR 15747-2, provides high accuracy in temperature measurements for testing of water heating solar collectors. To meet this specification it was necessary to study design, testing, assembling and calibration of a device for measuring the differential temperature between inlet and outlet of the working fluid in the solar collectors with the accuracy specified. This device comprises a Kelvin bridge circuit using a high precision platinum sensor and is powered by a source of high stability. This paper describes the development of this bench and its instrumentation for a complete tests and comparisons system of water heating solar collectors to meet the Brazilian standard in use as well as perform other types of comparative testing.
