Abstract

The studies of grounding in electrical installations usually consider only the protection regarding fault issues; however, if the system comprises power electronic converters, such studies shall also contemplate the flow of currents through the ground induced by the fast variations of the voltage arising from the switching process. The present work addresses the main questions concerning the grounding aspects of a photovoltaic generation system, but focusing on the evaluation of the ground high-frequency current that naturally flows during the operation of this type of system, which is connected to the grid through a three-phase inverter. Aside from the protection issues, different configurations for the functional grounding are compared in order to guide the designer through the best way to avoid this undesirable current flow without compromising the system performance and conducted EMI requirements.
