The distribution transformers have high efficiency, but the small percentage of losses is the main responsible for their internally generated heat. The distribution transformers installed outdoors have their temperatures increased also due to absorption of solar radiation. To test different coatings it was mounted an experimental comparison assembly for determining the equivalent power losses of the transformer to keep the oil at a predetermined temperature. This study shows that the use of selective coating with high reflectance of solar radiation and good emittance can produce a significant reduction in the transformer oil temperature, allowing increasing its power output and extending its useful life.
